چکیده

Dr. Muḥammad-Javad Eskandarlū’s book, Qur᾽ān wa ulūm-i siyāsī wa ijtimāʿī az nigāh-i Mustashriqān (dar sanjih-ye naqd-i shubuhāt), [The Quran and Political and Social Sciences from the Perspective of Orientalists (in the context of critiquing doubts)] (2020) critically examines Orientalist perspectives on the political and social dimensions of the Quran, addressing key doubts raised in scholarly works such as the Brill Encyclopedia of the Quran. The study explores the Quran’s guidance on governance and societal organization, emphasizing its divine authority as manifested through the Prophet (s), infallible Imams (a), and qualified jurists during the occultation period. The book is divided into two main sections. The first critiques Orientalist interpretations of political themes in the Quran, including the concept of ulu al-amr (those invested with authority), the divine basis of wilāyat-i faqīh (guardianship of the jurist), and the political implications of Quranic verses. It responds to eight specific doubts, such as the nature of prophetic authority and the Quran’s political scope, using Quranic exegesis and Shia perspectives. The second section analyzes Orientalist views on social aspects of the Quran, addressing topics like the concept of umma, marriage, hijab, and the Quran’s societal role, while critiquing methodological shortcomings in works by scholars like Fredrick Mathewson Denny and Dale Eickelman. Through a rigorous critique grounded in Islamic scholarship, the book defends the Quran’s comprehensive guidance on political and social life, highlighting its divine origin and adaptability to human needs.
