An Analytical Study on the “Tafsīr Mawḍūʿī (Thematic Exegesis) of The Holy Quran,” Theorized by The Grand Ayatullah Martyr Sayyid Muḥammad Bāqir Ṣadr

Thematic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍūʿī) represents one of the contemporary approaches to Qur’anic interpretation; however, its manifestation in the form of tafsīr of Āyāt al-Aḥkām[1] possesses a long-standing historical background that extends back to the earliest centuries of Islam. However, it has been considered a new method according to its special exegetical approach and inclusion of other Quranic subjects. In the method of thematic exegesis, the verses of the Quran are not cut, i.e., one should not attempt to understand a concept—such as justice, freedom, or divine norms—by isolating a single verse and interpreting it on its own. Rather, all verses related to that subject must be studied collectively, so that the holistic and integrated vision that the Quran offers can be properly understood. Additionally, they are not studied and pondered continuously and in sequential form; rather, a thematic exegete strives in his study to focus on a single subject expressed in the Quran. In an analytical method, this study tried to analyze the theory in diverse sections. Accordingly, the systematic coherence of Quranic doctrine and dependency on human experience are considered among the most significant fundamentals of the theory. Ayatollah Ṣadr applied a set of methods in the theory, such as following the correct exegetical principles and rules and benefitting from Istiqra’ (induction). Istinṭāq (interrogation) from the Quran and dealing with particular subjects through theorization are among the particular features and elements of the theory. His novel theory has included several positive consequences in the realm of Quranic exegesis, e.g., responding to human needs in the beam of their vast subjects and amelioration of inter-sectarian discord.

The Process of Istiẓhār (Textual Inference) and Systematic Understanding of the Quran in Al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān

In Al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān, ʿAllāmah Sayyid Muhammad Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabā’ī introduces a novel and systematic approach grounded in the “process of istiẓhār” (deriving meaning from textual indications). The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive and step-by-step analysis of the istiẓhār process in ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s exegetical method, in order to clarify the stages and components involved in a systematic understanding of Quranic verses. Employing a library-based research method and content analysis of ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s exegetical approach in al-Mīzān, this article explicates the structure and stages of the istiẓhār process. The findings indicate that the istiẓhār process in ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s exegetical method, grounded in principles such as avoiding the imposition of extraneous views and affirming the probative authority of the apparent meanings of the verses, follows a coherent seven-stage structure. These stages include: 1. Lexical analysis based on philology, 2. Examination of the rules of the Arabic language, 3. Attention to the contextual flow of the verses (connected indicators), 4. Utilization of disconnected indicators (such as occasions of revelation). The core of this process is the fifth stage, 5. The interpretation of the Quran by the Quran, which guarantees the semantic interconnectedness of the verses. Finally, the inferred meaning is completed and consolidated through 6. Critical evaluation of earlier exegetical views, and 7. Recourse to reliable hadiths transmitted from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).

An Analysis of the Quranic Foundations for the Demise of the Zionist Regime

The destruction of oppression and oppressors, alongside the ultimate victory of the oppressed, constitutes one of the most fundamental teachings of the Holy Quran. Analyzing the Quranic perspective on the collapse of a regime recognized as the prime manifestation of international tyranny in the last century is of paramount importance. This research seeks to investigate the Quranic principles regarding the imminent destruction of the Zionist regime. In terms of objective, the present study is categorized as basic research; regarding the data type, it employs fundamental conceptualization; methodologically, it follows a descriptive-analytical strategy; and in terms of tools, it is a documentary-based study. Reflection on library documents and an exploration of the themes within Quranic verses indicate that, based on Quranic evidence as a religious and metaphysical source, there are several foundational roots: namely, the decisive warning regarding the neutralization of Jewish conspiracies, the curse pronounced by David (a) and Jesus (a), the certain promise of the destruction of oppressors, severe divine retribution following the second instance of great corruption, the swift punishment for the displacement of believers, the chastisement of tyrants at the hands of righteous believers, and the inherent instability of the “Evil Tree” (Shajarah Khabithah). Collectively, these elements signify the inevitable destruction of the Zionist regime, representing an irrevocable divine promise that will certainly be fulfilled.

A Quranic Analysis of Enemy Strategies in Hybrid Warfare, with Emphasis on Weakening Defensive Power

Contemporary security developments indicate that modern threats, rather than relying solely on hard power, increasingly focus on undermining the will, beliefs, and perceptions of societies—a process that manifests within the framework of “hybrid warfare,” particularly in the form of “cognitive-media warfare.” Within this context, the defensive power of the Islamic society is a multidimensional concept that, in addition to military capability, encompasses soft, perceptual, and cognitive dimensions. The primary objective of the present study is to identify and analyze the enemy’s strategies in hybrid warfare with a focus on weakening defensive power and eroding collective will from the perspective of the Holy Quran. This research adopts a descriptive–analytical approach and employs conceptual analysis of Quranic verses alongside authoritative Quranic exegeses. The findings demonstrate that the Holy Quran, by elucidating the mechanisms of the war of wills, points to strategies such as psychological operations, rumor‑mongering, the production of despair, religious mockery, social division, cultural infiltration, political crisis‑making, and targeted economic pressure. Collectively, these strategies delineate a coherent framework of the enemy’s hybrid warfare aimed at weakening the defensive power of the Islamic society.

Comparative Analysis of the Theological and Literary Foundations of English Translations of Sūrat al‑Mā’idah

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the theological and literary foundations underlying selected English translations of the Quran, with particular reference to selected verses from Sūrat al‑Mā’idah. Adopting a descriptive‑analytical and comparative methodology, the study examines how translators’ theological commitments, especially Sunni and Shiʿite exegetical orientations, and their literary competence influence lexical selection, grammatical construction, and semantic precision. Drawing on authoritative Arabic lexicons, classical Sunni and Shiʿite tafsīrs, and linguistic analysis, the paper investigates the translation of key Quranic expressions such as walī, wa‑hum rākiʿūn, yuqīmūna al‑ṣalāh, and munkar. The findings demonstrate that Quranic translation functions as a condensed form of exegesis, wherein inadequate attention to theological premises or Arabic literary features may result in semantic reduction or doctrinal distortion. The study concludes that faithful Quran translation requires an integrated approach combining theological rigor, exegetical awareness, and literary precision in both source and target languages

Components of Women’s Identity Formation in the Quranic Thought of Martyr Imam Khamenei

The issue of the components that contribute to the formation of women’s identity is one of the fundamental questions in the field of women’s studies from the perspective of the Holy Quran. The significance of this topic has long motivated Muslim scholars to identify and analyze these components. Employing a descriptive–analytical method and drawing on library-based data, as well as the perspectives of several experts in the fields of Quranic studies and women’s studies, this article seeks to answer the following question: According to the Qur’anic thought of Imam Khamenei, what are the principal components involved in the formation of women’s identity? The most important finding of the present study indicates that, from his perspective, factors such as adopting a positive view toward the lofty value and status of women within the order of existence, belief in women’s diverse God-given capacities and potentials, recognition of the equality of women and men in the realm of faith and righteous action, and acknowledgment of the exceptional role of women’s emotional capacities in the sphere of life, among others, constitute some of the most significant components in the formation of women’s identity.

Overview of the Book “Tafsīr i Sūra-yi Ṣaff” by Martyr Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei

This article presents a review of Tafsīr-i Sūrah-yi Ṣaff, a Quranic exegetical work by Martyr Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei, comprising an edited transcript of four tafsīr sessions conducted between December 1982 and January 1983. The work systematically examines all fourteen verses of Sūrat al-Ṣaff, with particular emphasis on the theological imperatives of jihād, moral integrity, and divine governance. The exegesis draws upon classical Islamic scholarship while addressing contemporary socio-political realities, situating the sūra's Medinan revelatory context in direct correspondence with post-revolutionary Iran. Central themes include the condemnation of empty profession of faith, the spiritual consequences of moral deviation, the inextinguishability of divine truth in the face of adversarial forces, and the eschatological promise of Islam's universal prevalence. Through intertextual engagement with Quranic verses, prophetic traditions, and the commentaries of scholars such as ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī, the work offers a cohesive hermeneutical framework that integrates spiritual, ethical, and political dimensions of Islamic thought, culminating in an exhortation to believers to remain steadfast as helpers of God.

“Transmitted Evidence and Its Analysis on the Continuity of Divine Grace During the Occultation of the Hujjah in the Existential System of the Universe”

Generative guardianship, as one of the fundamental topics in Shiite theology, plays a crucial role in the relationship between God and the universe. Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his return), as the divine representative and intermediary of grace, holds a central position in the continuity of the flow of divine grace. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method to explore generative guardianship in the perfect human being and analyzes its continuity during the occultation of the Hujjah from the perspective of verses and traditions. The main question of this research is how the necessity of the continuity of Imam Mahdi’s (s) generative guardianship during the occultation is explained and what evidence exists for it. The findings of the study indicate that, based on rational foundations, including the principle of divine grace (Qaidah Lutf) and the system of causality, the existence of a divine representative is essential for maintaining balance and the survival of the cosmic system. Additionally, the analysis of transmitted evidence shows that the occultation of the Imam does not prevent the continuity of his generative guardianship in guiding the world and delivering divine grace to creatures. This research, by examining the theories of interpreters, demonstrates that generative guardianship is not only compatible with monotheistic principles but is also rooted in the wise system of divine governance in managing the realm. Furthermore, by critiquing contemporary doubts surrounding Takhini Wilayah, the position of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his return) in guiding and managing existence is elucidated.
