چکیده

This study aims to analyze and comparatively examine the characterization of Joseph (a) in the Holy Quran and the Torah. It asks how the two scriptures construct Joseph’s identity, explain the epistemological foundations of his actions, and assign meaning to major stages of his life, including the dream, the well, temptation, imprisonment, dream interpretation, and political authority. The study employs a descriptive–analytical and comparative methodology informed by narratological analysis, focusing conceptually on narrative structure, characterization, actions, dialogue, dreams, and the theological and social contexts of the narratives. The analysis demonstrates that, although the two narratives share major plot elements, they construct fundamentally different models of character. The Quran presents Joseph as a divinely chosen, monotheistic, sincere, and infallible prophet whose experiences unfold within a teleological framework of divine providence, spiritual formation, and individual and social reform. The Torah, by contrast, emphasizes Joseph’s moral integrity, resilience, practical wisdom, competence, and gradual advancement within familial, social, and political relations. These findings highlight the importance of integrating narratological and theological perspectives in comparative scriptural studies and provide a conceptual basis for further research on characterization, theological meaning, and the pedagogical functions of sacred narratives across religious traditions.
